7/31/2020 0 Comments Pacific RimPacific Rim National Park is near Tofino, BC, along the West Coast of Vancouver Island. I've visited the park on three occasions - once in the early 2000's, once in the early 2010s and again this year. The beach has fine sand, and when the tide is low, large rocks are exposed covered in barnacles, mussels, and sea anenomes. This year I also started to appreciate the vegetation that can be found along to beach margin. To commemorate the trip, I did a short, plein-air piece showing the south-looking view from the main beach as well as a bit of nature journaling.

This one is titled "Relocation" and depicts an ant carrying a pupa as the nest is relocated. I was in the park taking photos when I stumbled across a trail of ants re-locating their nest. I decided to stick around for a while and take some photos of the process (you can get a feeling for this in the second short Youtube clip). It was tricky to get good photos of such small organisms, moving so quickly, but there were few shots I liked that inspired me to do the painting. I used the same process of a detailed line drawing, outlining the image with inks, and then going in afterwards with watercolour to give it shape.

5/29/2020 0 Comments West Coast FoliageI was feeling inspired by the process I used in the Italy triptych, so I produced a second triptych using a similar process. This time I chose to highlight three common plants found in forests of the Pacific Northwest : from left to right, trailing blackberry (Rubus ursinus), sword fern (Polystichum munitum), and salal (Gaultheria shallon ). All of these plants are very abundant on the property where I am staying and when I go for walks along the trails. In the spring, both salal and sword fern have new growth that shines a vibrant green above the darker leaves from the previous year. It makes for a beautiful scene in the forest. At the local park, there are sword ferns whose leaves reach a height of 1 - 1.5 m tall (the sword fern are beat by the bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) - many of which are 2 m tall or higher!).

I chose to use green, because I just can't stay away from it. Then I added a reddish brown to be complementary and some gold paint since I never seem to find an excuse to use it.
After laying down an abstract foundation in paint, I drew in a structure, and then used a pentel pocket brush pen to do the line work. The finished triptych: 6/25/2018 0 Comments Week 26: Hometown
