7/31/2020 0 Comments Pacific RimPacific Rim National Park is near Tofino, BC, along the West Coast of Vancouver Island. I've visited the park on three occasions - once in the early 2000's, once in the early 2010s and again this year. The beach has fine sand, and when the tide is low, large rocks are exposed covered in barnacles, mussels, and sea anenomes. This year I also started to appreciate the vegetation that can be found along to beach margin. To commemorate the trip, I did a short, plein-air piece showing the south-looking view from the main beach as well as a bit of nature journaling.

This one is titled "Relocation" and depicts an ant carrying a pupa as the nest is relocated. I was in the park taking photos when I stumbled across a trail of ants re-locating their nest. I decided to stick around for a while and take some photos of the process (you can get a feeling for this in the second short Youtube clip). It was tricky to get good photos of such small organisms, moving so quickly, but there were few shots I liked that inspired me to do the painting. I used the same process of a detailed line drawing, outlining the image with inks, and then going in afterwards with watercolour to give it shape.
